The flag of Afghanistan consists of three equal vertical stripes, black on the left, red in the center, and green on the right. In the center of the red stripe is the national emblem, which features a pulpit and flags on either side. Below the pulpit is an Eastern Arabic inscription of the Shahada (the Muslim creed), which is the Eastern Arabic numerals for the solar year 1298 (1919 in the Gregorian calendar, the year of the Afghan independence from the United Kingdom); this central image is surrounded by a border of wheat sheaves on the left and right; an Arabic inscription of the Takbir (an Arabic expression meaning “God is great”) is in the upper-center; and at the bottom center is a scroll. The black stripe represents Afghanistan’s dark past. The red represents the blood shed for independence. The green represents hope for a bright future.
