During its colonial era, Guinea-Bissau was under Portuguese rule and flew the Portuguese flag until gaining independence in 1973. Throughout the struggle for independence, the African Party championed a flag representing the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which closely resembled the modern flag of Guinea-Bissau. The distinction was that the PAIGC flag featured the abbreviation “PAIGC” beneath the black star. Taking cues from the flag of Ghana, which comprises three horizontal bands of red, yellow, and green with a centered black star in the yellow band, Guinea-Bissau found its inspiration. Ghana, having achieved independence in 1957, served as a beacon for other nations like Guinea-Bissau, influencing their choice of a similar flag design as a tribute to the solidarity of African nations in their pursuit of freedom.
After achieving independence from Portugal on September 24, 1973, Guinea-Bissau introduced its official flag. This flag is composed of two parallel bands, one yellow and the other green, with a red vertical band positioned on the left side. At the center of the red band lies a black five-pointed star.
